Cupcakery inspiration; Martha Stewart's Cupcakes giveaway

This photo was part of a series shot in January, the last time I baked cupcakes from Martha Stewart.
I have three (main) places I keep cookbooks.
There are those stored in the bookshelves that line our den (also where I keep my magazine back issues). I consider these the reference books, those that I turn to for a specific inspiration or if I am looking for a particular recipe. The top shelves are reserved for my most treasured-tomes, the coffee table styled works from authors I admire; they sit alongside the dog-eared, aged copies of cookbooks from my childhood and before.
The second is our dining room table, much to the chagrin of my dear husband. Our dining room is often the resting place of books in transit, those making their way from the kitchen back up to the den. I would be lying if I told you that books do not sometimes take up an extended residence on that table, or if I denied my errant desire to line that room with bookshelves as well.
The third cookbook habitat is our kitchen itself. Behind the closed doors of a built-in cabinet live those books I use most often. These are the books I feel lost without, the ones that best reflect the way I cook and the way we eat. The selection rotates now and again, with titles being promoted and demoted, but there are certain regulars that never lose their place.
I am not yet sure as to where Martha Stewart's Cupcakes will land up, but I'm aiming to find out. With William's first birthday next week (so big!) and celebrations planned, I will be turning to Ms. Stewart for cupcakery inspiration.
And here's the best part - you, my dear friends, will be able to partake in the fun. Below are links to the recipes from the book which are currently available online, so you can get out your muffin tins, cupcake liners and get to baking. But wait, there's more! Random House Canada has generously provided the booty for a contest to celebrate the book's launch. What's there to win? Hold on to your hats:
Grand prize: A copy of Martha Stewart's Cupcakes and a copy of Martha Stewart's Cookies (one to be awarded)
Secondary prize: A copy of Martha Stewart's Cupcakes (two to be awarded)
To enter, simply comment at the end of this post; maybe we can chat about our favourite cookbooks or cupcakes or cupcake memory - you decide. But leave your comment by midnight Wednesday, June 10, 2009 (EST), and please include both your email address if not signed in, and a note of your desire to enter (this way, non entrants can still join the chat). If you do not want to sign in, nor do you want to publish your email, please comment then email me at tara [at] sevenspoons [dot] net, with the name you used to comment.
The winner will be selected by at random, and announced the next day. One note, due to distribution regulations, this contest is only open to residents of Canada. My apologies to international readers (this might be a good time to ask your Canadian friends to do you a favour).
Good luck!
Psst. It got mentioned in the comments, so I'll add a note - here's my review of Martha Stewart's Cookies from way back.

Um...cupcake cookbook? Yes, please!
Hubby and I have a semi-tradition of making cupcakes on New Year's Day. Because what better way to start a new year than with cupcakes! :)
A Canadian only contest? I love it!! Sign me up! My favorite cupcake memory? The coconut cupcakes I made for my wedding (I also printed the recipe on a recipe card which also doubled as our program) were amazing and probably the best cupcakes I've ever eaten (but I was smitten with love that day!)
Ooooh! I would love to win this book!! I`ve just started making cupcakes and I love it. Next week my co-workers are getting a taste of them :)
Thanks for such a great contest!
Here are some pics of the ones I`ve made recently..as you can tell by the frosting techniques, I`m still learning...

Count me in for cupcakes. I've recently discovered the red velvet kind and they could easily be my favorite.
Well, I'm not eligible for this contest, living the the Northeast US, but did want to let you know that I totally can relate to your multitude of storage options for your cookbooks! Thanks for posting links to Martha's online cupcake recipes -- I'll bookmark this page.

My cookbooks are forever around the house and I keep trying to put them back on their shelves!!!
I live in the States, but can I enter using my Tante Alice's address in Montreal? : )
To me there is nothing better than a classic yellow cake with chocolate buttercream frosting.
Do you know what kind of piping tip to use to make frosting swirls like professional bakeries? I usually spread frosting and then gently tap the frosting in quick little beats with the back of a spoon to make little peaks and curls, but I want big, lofty smooth swirls of frosting!
Hope you're well!
My favourite memory would have to be of making cupcakes at work. They are outright monsters. 4 inches high, topped with icing roses and leaves, sometimes sugar butterflies and ladybugs. They fly out of the showcase every time I make them. Too sweet for me, but I love to make them.
I would love to be entered!
At first I wasn't going to get this book because I figured my bookshelf was overflooded with them. But who can resist the beautiful pictures and recipes om martha?! I can't! I loved her one bowl chocolate cupcakes from her "Baking Handbook" so I don't think she will let me down with this new endeavor. Those were some good cupcakes for Christmas and everyone thought they were ultra moist and tasty...
There are no words for how much I want that cookbook. Enter me, please.
I also have multiple cookbook storage. The ones I have out from the library are right by the armchair where our library-book stash lives. The "reference" ones are in the main bookshelves in our living room, and the everyday ones live in my kitchen. There's a built-in microwave nook, and I have no microwave... and cookbooks look wonderful lined up in that nook.
Martha and cupcakes?! Count me in as these are my 2 favourite things! I have the Martha Stewart Baking Handbook and the one bowl chocolate cupcakes in there is THE BEST! Everyone loves them and they ALWAYS turn out no matter how hard to try to screw it up! I haven't seen the cupcake book yet but if I don't win, I might go check it out anyway!
OH! I love reading your blog and I would LOVE to win those cookbooks!
:) :) :) :)

I'm so happy to see a Canadian giveaway! Hahahaha I usually have to quietly turn away from US ones :( This is a lovely giveaway, thanks for having it :)
My favourite cupcake is, bar-non, vanilla bean + coconut with coconut icing! This is weird since I'm a total choco-loving gal, but soemthing about the moistness of coconut batter and then the flaky-sweet icing... gosh, can't control myself! I especially like the ones from Crave (Calgary) or The Cupcake shoppe (Toronto)
You should take a look at Martha Stewart cookie book. It's awesome! I've tried probably half of the recipes in the book and they're all divinely delicious.
I've checkout the link you added for different cupcake. Yours, the tiramisu and black forest ones are sooooo tempting!
What's not to like--cupcakes, Martha, and only in Canada, you say?
Your pictures are wonderful! Please enter me too!
Tiramisu cupcake... that sounds like a combination of two perfect things. I must try that one!
This is a great giveaway thanks!
Sorry, my email address is mussacaleca@yahoo.com. Thanks!
My husband told me two days ago "you have enough cupcakes books now" pfffff
I'd love to have Martha Stewart's book.
My favorite cupcake memory is my daughter's 3rd birthday. We organized a big picnic and I cooked a lot of cupcakes, her favorite ones ? vanilla batter with a lavender toping :)
I loved her face when she discovered these treats for her birthday.
I would love to enter this giveaway!
My favourite cupcake is chocolate batetr and choco-espresso icing. Perfection!
My email address is pelu140@hotmail.com
Thanks!
I'd love to win a copy of Martha Stewart's Cupcakes...I've created a page at Martha Stewart's Cupcakes Book Review all about the cookbook with the intention of adding my review. Please visit and let me know what YOU think of the book!
Please enter me too!!!
I love all of Martha's books and the cookie one is the next one my to-buy list... winning it would be GREAT!
Sweetest memorie would be when my big sister baked a GIANT cookie for my birthday, and I ate it all!
My email address is rad_stomaci@hotmail.com
I have various places I keep my books too and am running out of room!
Oooh I've been meaning to get a copy of Martha's books! My favorite recipe book so far is Dorie Greenspan's -Baking from my home to yours =)
This post has been removed by the author.
I would love to win a copy of Martha's new cupcake book...been waiting for it to come out for months now!!
My favorite Martha Stewart recipe is her banana bread recipe (with sour cream mixed in...heaven!!!)...mmm. May just go make some right now.
Oh man, I love Martha's cupcake recipes... hers are the only ones I've ever made that didn't turn out dry. Although I want to try Amy Sedaris' recipe, because the directions are hilarious: "cook until they look done." I'd love to enter your contest!
I love cupcakes so much! I made my best friend Katie cupcakes in ice cream cones for her birthday YEARS ago when we were in high school and she still talks about how they are her favorite to this day. That is definitely my favorite cupcake memory.
Wow, a Canadian-only contest! So rare, indeed! I want to enter, please. =)
We're quite new to this whole cupcake world, seeing as we don't bake much at all. We do like the standard yellow cupcake from America's Test Kitchen, even plain without frosting! We jazzed it up one time by flavoring it with jalapeno. =)
My son's first birthday is in a few months and I want to serve cupcakes at his party. So I would love to win a copy of this cookbook!
kjennings217@gmail.com
Drats! I wanted to enter your contest - I'm like you I have many many cookbooks and I read them like others read novels. I don't have a favorite - I rotate as my tastes change. This was a fun read! ~ Robyn
I love cupcakes and I want a shot at winning the cookbook, please! My most recent memory is enjoying a neopolitan cupcake (chocolate cake, with vanilla and strawberry buttercream) by the beach with a dear friend.
I don't have either of these books and would love either!
I live the Canadian Living Cooks cookbook. I love Elizabeth Baird!
What a great contest - count me in! I keep promising myself I won't buy any more cookbooks, but winning one (or two!) surely can't count, right?
My favourite memory of cupcakes are the ones from my wedding. Made by a local baker and every flavour was oh so amazingly delicious! They even convinced me to like chocolate-mint. sigh.
That such a cool contest, please enter me in! Maybe I'll win and add to my 2 book collection..haha. I only have 2 books, CI's BNR and Dorie's BRMHTY.
Birthdays are always fun excuses to bake cupcakes and a lot of them!
I love cupcakes! I love Martha! (PS I love your site!)
As I am, at this very moment, about to pull cupcakes out of the oven (vegan coconut, from kickpleat - second comment above), I am trying to think about why I love them. I don't know! They're cute and pretty and automatically a smaller portion that a big slice of cake. They're also the memory of grad school, when I'd walk to Swirlz in Chicago's Lincoln Park and buy whatever looked good that day.
I loved her cookie book, (It's on my too buy list), so I know I will love her cupcake book. Cupcakes are my new favourite thing to bake. To win them both would be sublime!
I would love to win these books. I make the chocolate gingerbread cookies on the front of the Martha Stewart Cookies book constantly, and everyone is always impressed. Next stop, cupcakes!
Ooh, I wouldn't say no to a Cupcake book! From the sounds of your cookbook collection and storage habits, it sounds like we may have been separated at birth...
And I do have a cupcake story. When I was about 7 I started the Kooky Cupcake Company with a $20 loan from my Mom. I used the One Egg Cake recipe from Joy, and labeled my ingredients so they didn't get mixed up with the rest. I sold them up and down my street and alley, and actually turned a profit after repaying my loan. (Most of the profits were, um, eaten up.)
Sounds delicious!
I plan to work my way through that cookbook as I did with the Cookies one.
I've been dying to give this book a try - consider this my entry to the contest.
I actually just received Martha's Baking Handbook in the mail today as an anniversary present, and will have to spend some serious quality time with that baby before I get another one.
Love the idea of a giveaway, but I'm in sunny Australia so do not qualify. But would be interested in what you think of the book. I haven't ordered it yet from Amazon but wonder how much is repeated from other baking books. I have pretty much everything else from Martha.
Yum, cupcakes! And how nice to have a Canadian-only contest.
My favourite cupcake memory is making them with my mum and sister. While my mum would clean up the mess we made mixing the batter, and after we had licked the beaters and the bowl, my sister and I would stare through the oven window watching the cupcakes bake. It always seemed like a little bit of magic.
The best part was decorating the cupcakes after they had cooled. I loved the sprinkles.
I just stumbled across your blog from The Wednesday Chef - it's perfect, exactly what I want my blog to be! I love how you mix your character with the recipes and add that personal touch. And gorgeous pics! Just wish I lived in Canada! Will be back to visit shortly!
My favorite memory of cupcakes is eating any of the ones my friend makes. She makes an awesome Red Velvet cupcake with Butter cream icing... Yum!
I am not a baker, but I like to try products. Being canadian, I always pick up stuff in the States when I visit that we don't have here. I picked up Duncan Hines German Chocolate Cake Mix and Coconut Pecan Frosting... These are five-star products: Easy peasy, fluffy, delish and inexpensive!
I would love to be entered in the giveaway! My email is rmussa@flynn.ca.
My sweetest cupcake memory is stopping for cupcakes and sharing one with my daughter after a saturday afternoon stroll in the park!
I love baking! I always bake my friend's birthday treats, pies, cupcakes, cakes, whatever they choose. I would love a new addition to my cookbooks!
i echo kickpleat's comment! so yes please, enter me into the contest. and i would very much like to hear about the cookbooks without which you'd be lost. i always love to see other's favourites.
amy (amy.rose@mail.mcgill.ca)
I'm a cookie gal by trade, but can't resist cupcakes either! (email is chiccookiekits@yahoo.com) I also posted a link to your contest on my edible crafts column (at ediblecrafts.craftgossip.com). Wait a minute...just increased my competition! What self-sacrifice for the greater sweet good.
oops! sorry! Scratch me... I'm in the US. I'll make the Canada-only change on my edible crafts column, too!
Oo! Great giveaway! I'd like to enter! I miss Crave cupcakes from when I lived in Calgary...
email: mel@smilingfrog.ca
OOOhhhh cupcakes.....enter me in the contest please! The Martha Stewart Cookie book was fantastic. I really hope this becomes a long running series. Maybe cakes next?
Another good cupcake book is "Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World" (there's a corresponding cookie one coming out soon too.) Lots of really neat and yummy ideas. That they are vegan is just a bonus!
I own over 100 cookbooks, but I do not have that one...and I am a cupcake addict!
I would love to win!
Mmm...hazelnut cupcakes...
Please enter me to win a cookbook!
Most memories involving cupcakes are good ones...my most recent cherished memory is of a friend's wedding where they had cupcakes in lieu of a cake. Plus plenty of leftovers that we got to take home with us :)
Umm who doesn't love cupcakes and books, and books dedicated TO cupcakes. I saw the book today at Costco.
By the way that frosting looks dangerous, dangerously good that is.
Also, a Canada only contest who even knew!!!!!!!
So excited.
I just noticed that this is for Canadians only.
I am not able to win because I live in the USA, but I did want to let you know that I am sharing this giveaway with all of my friends on All Things Cupcake. The post will appear on June 9th. I also have a similar giveaway of 3 Martha Stewart's Cupcakes cookbooks as well as 1 Martha Stewart's Cookies Cookbook also on the 9th that will be open to US Citizens as well.
I'm sticking my finger into the bowl for this one!
Ugh, what to say about cupcakes when there is too much to say?!
Chocolate, White, Avocado (yeah...it was actually good, with chili sauce!), and my all time favorite VELVET.
Oh, my heart skips a beat thinking about when I used to see those store bought cupcakes peeking through the plastic bag at school events. You know how they always show people dreaming of money falling from the sky? I dream of cupcakes falling from the sky. Yes, I want to be covered in their goodness.
Enough.
I'm glad you are going to count on Martha for William's first birthday and I hope you share pictures of your creations!
(Ah and I have to say that "Naples at Table" is a fantastic cookbook, especially if you like Southern Italian cooking! *the best, in this humble gal's opinion*)
OOO! I would love to enter. My favourite cookbooks are my Donna Hay's, as well as good ol' Betty Crocker. When you just need a quick mac and cheese, Betty's your girl!
I would love love love these cookbooks!!!
i love cupcakes! especially ones that have anything to do with chocolate.
count me in the contest!
I love cupcakes and I love Martha's one bowl chocolate cupcake recipe. I wonder if it's in this book.
Tara I would love to win the cupcake cookbook! I am a Canuck, newly married and a "burner". I am persistent in my quest to learn to cook/bake wonderful food for my husband and I...sometimes we end up ordering pizza, but sometimes things work out deliciously well. Thanks for your lovely blog; it has been an inspiration!
Love me a good cupcake!
Yummy! These look awesome... I've been wanting to get the MS Cookie and Cupcake book, but budgets been tight! Besides that, I'm running out of room... my cookbooks are spilling into my daughters room!
My 10yo daughter has had the Cookie book checked out from the library for about a year now. She just keeps renewing it and then blessing us with delicious creations.
I know she would love to win a copy.
I just wanted to let you know that I have awarded your blog the 'One Lovely Blog' award!
Please go to

I think I need a cupcake right now. Cupcakes forever. What a delightful giveaway!
I'll take the book ;)
Martha Stewart and cupcakes are a real match made in heaven!
What a great contest!
I'd love join.
My favourite cupcake is red velvet and cream cheese icing.
dramz_queen@hotmail.com
yum, yum - I'm not in Canada, but those chocolate cupcakes look divine!
and - I wanted to let you know that I'm having another giveaway myself this week, so please drop by :)
I am always up for collecting cookbooks. I recently stumbled across the 101cookbooks site and thought "101 cookbooks?! That would be wonderful". I think the books have become as much a piece of well used)daily art, as a reference resource. I am drawn to the beautiful photographs in them and would gladly accept more kitchen art :)
Sign me up!
Cupcake memory? For my grade one birthday party, my mom & grandma took a whole bunch of kids and I down to a natural area where we played by the creek w/ little boats my grandpa had made. Then instead of a cake, we had cupcakes (white w/ pink icing topped with a marichino (sp?) cherry.)
What I remember most distinctly was how sweet the icing was-- to colour it pink, my mom hadn't used red food colouring, but the juice from the cheeries!
That cupcake looks sooo edible right now at 3:45 in the afternoon...
Please sign me up for your lovely contest! I'm in England but the book can be delivered to my parents' house in Ottawa, should I be the lucky winner.
I'd love to be part of this very sweet contest! Cupcakes are my favourite treat and I'm always looking for new recipes. A new book would be amazing, count me in! jenviez@gmail.com
I have a few cookbooks at home that I use, though most of the time I like cooking from scratch. I have to admit, sometimes things do NOT turn out, but it's nice to try. :-)
Personally, I love cookbooks with easy ingredients that can be found in any grocery, or (and this rarely happens) in your own kitchen. I hate having to search out mysterious ingredients!
Cupcakes are a great treat - one of my favourite. :-)
K
You inspired me to bake up a batch of Martha's One-Bowl Chocolate Cupcakes with mocha icing. Yum!
Thanks for the inspiration and please enter me in your contest.
I'm in...I love cupcakes!
Just got the new BabyCakes NYC cookbook and can't wait to try their cupcake recipe!
I have always found that Martha's recipe are well-tested, always turn out, and yummy.
I have tons of cookbooks that I keep in two bigs cabinets with glass doors from Ikea. People always comment on how many I have. I also have back issue of food magazines that are grouped by months so it is easier for me say go for something in the summer to June, July, and August issues.
I would love to win the copies of these books....imagine this, I don't own them. :)

Hello from Montreal, Quebec, Canada! Yay for Canada contest!
Yay for Cupcakes... yum.. Tiramisu... :-)
My favorite cupcakes are definitely the most devilicious chocolate cupcake with tons of frostings (chocolate of course) on it, and some cute sprinkles.
I used to get two of them when, younger, i was at my grand mother's house, and sometimes they were so tasty that i'd like to grab a bite on each one of the two at the time.
coldcut_finity@hotmail.com
Oh and, count me in, please!
I like Martha, and I LOVE cupcakes! Count me in! I'll send you my email.
Sign me up for the contest! Who doesn't love cupcakes!
It's funny that you mention cookbook placement because my boyfriend and I are having trouble finding the room for ours in our tiny Montreal apartment. What's the point of having them in another room other than the kitchen or dining room? We want them close at hand so that we are constantly inspired to make new, delicious things. Until I have a bigger kitchen, I am comforted by food blogs. Do you know this cupcake one? http://cupcakeblog.com/
I recently moved to a new house and while helping me unpack a friend exclaimed, "You sure don't have many cookbooks for someone who likes to bake as much as you do!" Well she's right. I borrow all mine from the library or offline but as much as I enjoy cupcakes I may just have to buy this one if I don't win! Please, please, please enter me for this crazy generous giveaway. :)

Hello everyone! Thanks so much for all the enthusiastic cupcake stories. They've been great to read, and totally inspiring as I've been collected my thoughts on this book. I am thrilled by the excited response to the giveaway.
