Patriotic plates

It is frequently said that Canada, and by extension Canadians, have a bit of an identity crisis. As citizens of this post-colonial nation, with a diverse and scattered population, neighbours to a global superpower, our sense of selves seems in constant flux.
But don’t an ever-evolving cultural heritage belie our patriotism. Our commitment to multiculturalism, our languages, and even our relationship to our land speak of the pride we feel as Canadians.
A Canadian feast may include fresh seafood from the coasts, bison and beef from the prairies, soft fruit from Ontario, and maple syrup from Québec. Not to overlook the pierogies, curries, vinetarta, pizzas and bagels that reflect the varied faces of the Canadian landscape. It is this diversity that breathes Canada; and it is this culinary heritage that we will soon be celebrating.
In case you weren’t aware, a group of Canadian Food bloggers (myself included) will be participating in a Canada Day food blogging event, with the theme of “What does Canada taste like to you? “ For complete details and an introduction, please see the post by our lovely Domestic Goddess.
Please participate, the more the merrier. It is a great opportunity to celebrate our country and our online community, with very tasty dividends!

Hi Tara,
very well said! I look forward to your Canadian creation. Just don't go hunting any beavers or moose. They're too cute :)
I have a stuffed animal moose named Sir Thomas - there is no way I could hunt one of his relatives! As for beavers, the only part I'd be interested in are beaver tails ... remember those carnival treats of warm sweet bread slathered with butter and cinannamon sugar?
Sounds interesting - will definitely look forward to your Canadian feast of diversity. Canada brings to mind maple syrup and icewine but surely there must be more!
eatzycath; the diversity of the country is really what is making me enthusiastic to see the results. I can't wait to see how participants interpret the theme and express their own cultural and regional heritages!
Couldn't have said it better! See you on Taste Canada Day.
Well written Tara. Looking forward to your entry
I look forward to seeing everyone's contributions and commentaries!
Thank you so much for the amazing write up, Tara! I can't wait to see and read all the delicious Canadian-inspired recipes and stories that accompany them.
Mmmm. A recipe for Beaver Tails... now that just oozes Canadiana, doesn't it?
Hello Jennifer! I was thinking of attempting beaver tails for my post ... what could be more indicative of a Canadian summer than the carnival treat? However, when I searched online, I got results of the "exotic meat" variety. Somewhat distressing!
what if you just live in canada ( but are not canadian). can you still participate? What if you dont have a food blog?
Hi Tara, yes I remember the beaver tails well! they are a staple after a skate on the rideau canal in ottawa!
Michele, I went to an event this weekend and they were calling the treats "dough ears" - the heck? I've heard them as elephant ears before, but dough? What's the fun in that? They will always be beaver tails to me!
Hi Tara,
What a great idea. I'm not sure what exactly Canadian is, but if you can possibly toss some ideas my way, I can try to blog up something! =)
By the way, since you're pretty new to the scene, and since I noticed that you haven't been tagged as yet, would you mind participating in this meme started by Oliver and Nicky over at Delicious Days?

Hmnmm ... Canada in Hawaii, what could I suggest? Back bacon? I'll have to think about that, and open up the floor to anyone else who may have a suggestion! This is part of why I'm excited about this experiement. Canadian cuisine isn't a national menu really, but made up of the subcultures across the country (like the US has such strong regional infuences). I have no idea what people are going to come up with!
I'll be happy to be tagged, Reid. I'm posting my response to a tag (different meme) from Michele this evening - maybe I can combine the two.
